The slogan "Pop the cork if you dare" comes from Mionetto's British and American prosecco campaign. The message is simple but spot on: prosecco isn't only for summer terraces and weddings – it can be a great choice for a cosy Halloween party too.

And let's be honest: there's something exciting about the pop of a cork mixing with the glow of jack-o'-lanterns, the costumes and friends laughing.

Prosecco at Halloween? Why not?

Traditionally, Halloween and prosecco have little to do with each other. Halloween has Celtic roots, and Italian prosecco comes from a completely different world. Yet as pumpkin carving, dressing up and Halloween parties have become more popular in Hungary, prosecco has stepped forward as the elegant but playful drink of the night.

Prosecco is light, fresh and never pushy. It's festive enough to lift the evening, but relaxed enough to feel natural at a get-together with friends or a themed dinner.

On top of that, prosecco makes excellent Halloween cocktails. Here are two striking recipes that are sure to be a hit.

Halloween Spritz – a new face for a classic

The Halloween Spritz is a wickedly tempting take on the well-known Aperol Spritz. It keeps the fresh, bubbly character, but the orange tones, the garnish and the playful mood give it a proper Halloween look.

Halloween Spritz recipe

Ingredients:

  • 4.5 cl vodka
  • 3 cl Aperol
  • 2.2 cl pink grapefruit juice
  • 2 drops vanilla extract
  • about 3 cl soda water
  • ice cubes
  • black or orange sugar for the rim

Method:

  1. Fill a large wine or cocktail glass halfway with ice.
  2. Pour in the vodka, Aperol and grapefruit juice.
  3. Add a few drops of vanilla extract, then top up with soda water.
  4. Dip the rim of the glass in black or orange sugar for a properly spooky look.
  5. Serve cold and watch the bubbles dance in the light.

Morticia – elegant, dark and mysterious

The Morticia cocktail was inspired by the iconic character from the Addams Family. It's a deep, dark red drink that is elegant, striking and a little mysterious all at once – the kind that makes everyone pause for a second when it lands on the table.

Morticia cocktail recipe

Ingredients:

  • 5–6 fresh blueberries or blackcurrants
  • 1 small sprig of fresh thyme or rosemary
  • 5 cl pomegranate juice
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon honey or sugar syrup
  • 7–8 cl prosecco
  • ice cubes

Alcohol-free version: use ginger beer instead of prosecco.

Method:

  1. Put the blueberries or blackcurrants in the bottom of the glass and lightly crush them with the back of a spoon.
  2. Add the lemon juice, honey or sugar syrup and pomegranate juice, then stir.
  3. Add ice.
  4. Slowly top up with cold prosecco.
  5. Briefly light the thyme or rosemary sprig, blow it out, and place the smoking sprig in the glass as a garnish.
  6. Serve in a dark, black or purple-rimmed glass for a truly mysterious effect.

Tip: if there are children around, use ginger beer instead of prosecco. The drink stays just as striking, exciting and festive.

A sip of magic

Halloween and prosecco may come from two different worlds, but they work wonderfully together. The bubbles lift the mood of the evening, and the colours of the cocktails bring the decorations to life.

So if you want to bring a little elegance to the spooky night this 31 October, just pop the cork if you dare.

And remember: a good Halloween party always starts where the prosecco pops.
